Fireflies...

Malik shushed me lightly, whispering under his breath that I needed to wait for a little while longer. It was weird for Malik to do such a thing because...well, he's Malik. He's normally distant and hard to talk to, but now he was taking me out of the city and onto a high hill that was covered in flora that over-looked the vast deserts and mountains. Just when I was about to ask Malik just what we were doing out here, he suddenly pointed to the roll of the hill, smiling softly.
“Fireflies,” he whispered.
I watched them then, slowly rising to the sky, fluttering around us, lighting up the night sky. Just like stars, they shimmered and dimmly grew brighter occasionally, twinkling. One of the round balls of light landed upon my hand, the close proximity of the bug allowing me to see it's torso with it's glowing butt.
At that moment, if I closed my eyes, I could imagine myself back home, sitting out in the yard with my brothers years before, catching lightning bugs to give to our neighbor's cat so the feline's mouth would glow. For a moment, I could hear the snicker of my siblings as they rustled around the grass, trying to sneak up on unsuspecting bugs. I wanted to open my eyes and to really be there, to be home back where I belonged.
It was the closest to being back home that I had ever felt.
When I opened my eyes, I felt the tears fall down my cheeks, the realization that I was still here in some far away land hitting me hard. Then I was being turned, my arm seized and my gaze fell upon a worried Malik.
“Elisheba?”
I shook my head, biting my lip, trying to tell him that he shouldn't worry about it.

This is for my friend and her fanfiction [link] . I made up my own scene because I was too lazy to go look up one she had already made, but Oh well.
